STELVIO PASS
The National Road of Stelvio Pass connects the provinces of Sondrio and Bozen/Bolzano between Bormio and Spondinig/Spondigna. Two cultures met for long years at the Pass with a high strategic and military importance as it focused the interests of three nations: Italy, Austria and Switzerland.
The Stelvio road was opened in 1825, and required not only hard and long works, but also the sacrifice of many human lives. Frequent avalanches and landslides have hampered the work, but it was accomplished the important goal of making trade easier between the south side of the Alps and the Austro-German influence area.
36 hairpin turns, 21 kilometers from Bormio to the Pass. Now it’s a joy to drive along by car, motorcycle, or bike.
